“Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.” - Samuel Johnson
“The mind of the bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes

“Conversation would be vastly improved by the constant use of four simple words: I do not know.” - André Maurois
“It is very good to copy what one sees; it is much better to draw what you can't see any more but is in your memory. It is a transformation in which imagination and memory work together. You only reproduce what struck you, that is to say the necessary.” - Edgar Degas

Working to bridge the gap, a group of Irish teenagers are doing a summer service project in Milwaukee. They're helping MPS kids from Tippecanoe and Dover Schools lean the importance of nature and art.”

WWNH: Offering support to many area artists
River Falls Journal
“ Artists tend to be solitary souls in search of their particular reasons for being, while endeavoring to express ideas they hope will resonate with others. Regrettably, isolation may also be an affliction that puts an artist at risk of losing heart and aborting creative possibilities. That’s why the concept of a group of artists working together over an extended period of time is so important. Such an artists’ group, known as What We Need is Here (WWNH), has existed for the last several years under the umbrella of The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, and organized by its artistic director, Anastasia Shartin.”
Lopsided wings at Milwaukee Art Museum surprise onlookers

“Fanning up like a pair of wings against Lake Michigan, the signature brise soleil at the Milwaukee Art Museum is unlike anything on the planet. So when the majestic icon rises in a lopsided fashion, as it did Monday, it's bound to attract attention.”
Arts and Creativity in Education
Brian Wicklund and the Barley Jacks
Blog: PortalWisconsin.org
“Music has never been finer. That would be a take on my concert experience two weeks ago. I could have stayed all night. Let me explain. I went to Brian Wicklund’s camp in Marine on St. Croix in June. Ninety-five budding musicians met in a church 6 hours a day for 4 days in hopes of coming out the other side challenged, motivated, and inspired. This is the third year of the camp and it continues to escalate in number of participants. The ages ranged from 6 to ……let’s just say gray-haired. We don’t need to go there. There were fiddlers, mandolin players, guitarists and my group…the bass players. Okay, I’m not really a bass player. I took my cello and pretended to be a bass player for the week. Personally, I think I was in the coolest group. There is a cool factor to the bass group no matter where you are. This week was no exception particularly with Kevin Rowe at the helm. The man is amazing with a bass.”
Movie spurs growth in wizard academy
Wausau Daily Herald
“It was just good luck that the opening of the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" coincided with the Wizarding Academy offered at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County. The Wizarding Academy, a summer program that blends the world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter with academic pursuits such as writing, art, science and critical thinking, has been held in late July for four years, so there was no overt plan to link it to the buzz created by the movie, which opened at midnight on Thursday.”
Supporters lead the march to stronger band group
Greenfield Now
“After years of seeing the numbers languishing, but not the quality of the high school marching band, the Whitnall School Board is on the verge of trying to build up the band again. A committee may be formed to take a holistic look at the entire music program with an eye to enabling the marching band to expand.”

Called the Southeast Wisconsin Scholastic Writing Region, the judging body is an affiliate of the national nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, which conducts the annual Scholastic Writing Awards, said LuAnn Underwood, regional coordinator for the local region.”

Mount Horeb: home to trollway, tool museum
Roads Traveled
“Trolls rule in Mount Horeb, a peculiar, creative and vibrant Dane County village of 7,000. The scruffy, impish troll carvings – happy-crazed-creepy in expression, dwarfs to giants in size – have defined and guarded the community since the 1970s. …Now the untimely death of a former machinist, antiques dealer and community leader has widened the scope of Mount Horeb’s quirks to another species of outdoor art. Flanked by trolls at the visitors’ center is Brutus the Temple Lion, a rusty, fierce- and dazed-looking monster made of welded junkyard scraps.”

“ In all my years as a singer in a struggling rock band I somehow managed to avoid pay-to-play venues. The movie business, on the other hand, is always pay to play and the $175.00 admission fee I fork over to participate in this year's 48 Hour Film Project: Madison makes the little movie I created this weekend my biggest budget film to date. “Is the Milwaukee Art Museum--A TRANSFORMER!? I was surprised how well Milwaukee and the Art Museum worked as a setting in TRANSFORMERS Dark of the Moon. Dance workshop promotes message of hard work, positivity
Janesville Gazette
JANESVILLE – “Peterson Thelisma never stopped moving. The music raced, crashed, pounded. Thelisma never tired. He never rushed. He danced for hours, shouting encouragement to a room full of students. This was hard work, but the 25-year-old Thelisma never stopped grinning. That’s because Thelisma’s message is bigger than dancing, said Earl Smith of Loyalty La Famila Management.”

Classical Connections: Opera in the Park: Joy, Everywhere You Looked
Blog: Dane 101
“The typical opera outdoors event of summer is usually a fairly predictable, if enjoyable, event: a frothy overture, a few big hits liberally mixed with Broadway tunes, and one hopes that a few of the folks come back to check out the “real thing” in the fall. But as Opera in the Park celebrated their 10th free event in Garner Park on Saturday, they managed to elevate the tried and true into an event that looked back over their fifty year history, honored their roots and remembered a beloved operatic evangelist, introduced the new General Director, added a couple of major programming treats — and best of all, gave us a generous preview of exactly what we can expect at Overture Hall this coming season.”

The final attendance figure - 878,636 over the 11-day run - was 2.6% higher than the turnout in 2010.”

Call for Submissions for 2012 Athena Film Festival
Indie Wire
Submissions accepted through September 15
As you may know, I am the artistic director of the Athena Film Festival. The second festival will take place from February 9-12, 2012. We are opening our call for submissions today. Read the information carefully and spread it far and wide. Films have power. They create conversation. They reveal truths. They inspire. But for too many generations, Hollywood has told only half the story: too often, what is missing are the stories of women as change agents and heroes in their own right. For the second year, Barnard College, the most sought-after women’s college in the nation, will celebrate women’s leadership on screen at the Athena Film Festival which will take place from February 9-12, 2012.
